Book Review: 'The Light Shift' by Ritu Rao
Texas author Ritu Rao has found that small shifts in our approach to life can transform the way we live. She a practicing dentist and a business owner and now a writer who passion is to share the lessons she has learned. THE LIGHT SHIFT is her first book, where she talks about how small shifts can transform your life.
In her Introduction we gain access not only to her warm sense of humor but also to the idea behind writing this book: ‘You crave more: variety, challenge and growth… even if you can’t define them just yet. Those are all the things that make life interesting, and light your fire. They add that oomph, and tell the Rut to shove it! I am a firm believer in personal responsibility, and whenever the job, relationship, or even lack of external excitement does not align with our true selves, we can take steps to better our situation. We all want answers to the big questions, but until we find them, we can work with what we do have— today— to make each day count, and things get better from there. I’m offering suggestions— 21 of them— to inject your daily life with a little pep so your days feel less mundane and more interesting; less stuck’
Ritu opens with The Magic Bullets that make things happen: Take action, Be consistent, Put in the time, and Stay persistent. While these are solid and basic, the following are among the little shifts we can incorporate – Eat worthy (is it worth it?), The Seven Day Theme (a challenge a day for 7 days), Do without (stay away form your smart phone for an hour or two, etc), Get turned on by meditation, Quick decisions, The half visualizations and so on. Ritu provides the most common sense light shifts in the way we think, cope, behave, repeat, speak, judge – little hints of doable alterations that can make our lives so much more rich and happy and satisfying. Or as she says, ‘Are you waiting for one big moment to change your life? Chances are it's not coming.’ You need to makes the shifts yourself.
The reason this well considered ‘therapy’ works so well is the manner in which offers it – simple, straightforward, with a healthy dash of humor and relating her own experiences - that it is almost impossible not to change, just by reading and incorporating this book. She adds zest to her book by inserting some wonderful quotes, such as,’ If you can’t get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you’d best teach it to dance.’ ~ George Bernhard Shaw, and ‘I don't like work but I like what is in the work--the chance to find yourself. ~ Joseph Conrad.
