Book Review: 'It's Never Too Late: Getting Older, Wiser, and Worry Free in Our Golden Years' by Scott Page
Georgia author, handsome Scott Page comes to the subject matter of coping with the so-called Golden Years with solid credentials: he is President and CEO of The Lifeline Program, the venerable life settlement providers, is a highly respected expert on retirement and financial issues facing seniors and baby boomers, and has made guest appearances on media venues such as 20/20, NBC Nightly News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Fox Business Network's Varney & Co, and as a blogger on The Huffington Post.
Reading this well prepared book provides more reassurance that slipping into the retirement zone doesn’t have to be spelled ‘emotional and physical hospice’ but rather Scott delivers very practical advice on how to manage the ‘tasks’ of caring for life and ourselves – much information being concepts many of us push aside thinking ‘maybe tomorrow’. Well tomorrow is here for many of us and Scott organizes all the important ideas we’ve been avoiding and at the same time makes the process not only enlightening but also enjoyable reading.
A look at the sections into which he divides his chapters is a fine take off point: Part 1: The Groundwork - Reality Check, Breaking through the Wall of Resistance, Life Expectancy Planning, Getting Your Spiritual Act Together, “Change Your Focus, Change Your Future,” The Amazing Eat-Less-Move-More Diet Breakthrough, The Case for Doing Your Own Funeral Pre-Planning, Downsizing and Feeling Really Good about It, Encore Careers and Other Ways of Reinventing Yourself. Part 2: The Right Tools for the Right Job, Retirement Income Calculators, Social Security, Reverse Mortgages A Good Reason to Always Be on Your Toes, Long-Term Care Choices at Home or at “the Home”, Life Insurance and Life Settlements, Wills and Other Legal Safeguards You Can’t Afford to Ignore, and Trial by Fire. Try to think of any other ‘threatening others’ and you’ll likely find Scott has covered them all.
This is a superb map toward discovering how to embrace the older years gracefully and fruitfully. Read this book to prepare yourself – and to own informed information to offer those who may need it. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 16
