French author Thibaut Meurisse lives in Japan working for the Japanese government as a coordinator of international relations. He is pursuing my MBA at Japan’s leading university for economics in Tokyo. As he states on his website, ‘Chasing my dream took me thousands of miles from my hometown in France and required the mastery of both the English and Japanese language. When I look back at my life, I had no way to predict that I would be living in Japan, that I would do a MBA or that I would build a website about personal development! I realize that it is the unpredictability of life that make it all the more interesting… I am 100% focused on becoming the best version of myself as I commit my life to mastering the art of personal development.

Thibault has written ten books on self-improvement to date and here the reader benefits from his latest publication – CRUSH YOUR LIMITS: BREAK FREE FROM MENTAL LIMITATIONS AND ACHIEVE YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL. In Thibaut’s Introduction he places his mission (and ours!) before us – ‘If you put a chain around the leg of an elephant when it is still young, initially, it will try to escape. However, unable to do so, it will eventually give up and stop resisting. As it grows bigger and stronger, it could easily break free, but it never will. Instead, it will remain under the control of its trainer for the rest of its life. Why? Because it has been conditioned to believe it can’t escape. What if the only thing preventing you from living the life you want is the illusion that you can’t? What if the reasons you’re not where you want to be is the result of similar conditioning to that of the elephant? What if this conditioning is the result of the many assumptions you hold in various areas of your life? Now, imagine if you could transform your life simply by changing these assumptions. Could you be a few new assumptions away from success and happiness? The truth is you’re operating far below your maximum capabilities. In fact, we all are. Your current assumptions lead you to think, feel and act in a way that is incongruent with the results you want to obtain and the person you want to become. I believe it is possible for you to experience more happiness, success and fulfillment than you can ever imagine. How? By reframing your life, by questioning the way you think, feel and act, and by replacing your current limiting assumptions with more empowering ones. This is your life. Work it. Improve it. Win! Here is a more detailed summary of what you’ll learn in this book: In Part I, we will define assumptions and discuss how they limit you. You’ll learn how your assumptions have been affecting your life more than you probably think. In Part II, we will review fifty common assumptions that may be preventing you from reaching your full potential. We’ll discuss the assumptions you hold about yourself, life, success, emotions, work and time. Finally, in Part III, we will learn how you can replace your disempowering assumptions with more empowering ones, so you can make positive changes in your life and achieve your goals and dreams.’

What follows is not only sound philosophy and reassuring coaching from an expert but also exercises meant to allow us to gain access to his goal of self improvement. Typical of Thibaut’s method of coaching is evident in his concluding remarks – ‘shift your perspective and open yourself to new possibilities. You have an almost limitless potential and you can make an infinite number of choices every day. Refuse to confine yourself and refuse to make yourself smaller than you are. Instead, hold the space for more, and see yourself as you could be, rather than as you believe yourself to be right now. Whenever you catch yourself saying, “I can’t do this or that,” take a deep breath and ask yourself, “What if? What if it’s possible? Why not? How could I do that?” Keep removing disempowering assumptions and replace them with assumptions that give you more freedom and power to change your life and the lives of others. And, more importantly, take action. Move beyond your comfort zone. As you do so, you’ll be amazed at the wonderful things you can achieve. Review your empowering assumptions every day and keep refining them until you have a solid web of beliefs that will allow you to design the life you want. Finally, never stop believing in what’s possible. With an unshakable belief in yourself and in your vision, you can do extraordinary things.’ Highly Recommended.
