Book Review: 'Numbers!' by Lynne Dempsey

Pennsylvania author Lynne Dempsey is the award-winning author of the TAKE THE DOG OUT series (Readers' Favorite 2014 Gold Medal Winner and a 2014 USA Best Book Award-Winning Finalist) and she is assisted her by the excellent illustrator Mandy Newhan-Cobb.

In this book children are taught to count from 0 to 10 and backward form 10 to 0, to find the dog bones, count them and show written examples of how to add and subtract.

Each number is represented in both numeric form and written form and as the book progresses the number of animals and children and butterflies and other additions increase by one and at the top of each new number page are the numerals (eg.1+3 = 4), the same number of illustrated characters and the lightly hidden bones. Once the journey of adding people and animals reaches ten the return trip subtracts one character until we are left with simply the cat that started it all!

This is a delightful romp and a great way for children to practice numbers, addition, subtraction and rewards. Beautifully illustrated and conceived this is a winning book. Grady Harp, June 15
