Book Review: 'Secrets of Best-Selling Self-Published Authors' by William Cook

New Zealand author William Cook, a successful author in his own right ('Blood Related,' 'Gaze Into The Abyss: The Poetry of Jim Morrison' and 'Secrets of Best-Selling Self-Published Authors,' and numerous short stories and poems in anthologies, writes horror and thriller fiction primarily (he is a member of the Horror Writers Association, Australian Horror Writers Association, SpecFicNZ & the SFFANZ), but also ventures into literary fiction, a bit of Sci-fi, Young Adult and, more recently, Non-Fiction. And it is the latter coaching category that this book finds its niche – a very successful one at that.

The new trend in writing and publishing is ‘do it yourself’ in nature. And while it may be much less expensive t take this route to seeing your books on the available list for readers, there are many steps in making the system of self publishing work. That is the mission William has set out for us and he wisely bases his gathered information from interviews with successful self published authors – and immediacy to the secrets he wishes to share.

William’s Introduction to the goal of the book, but it also reveals the sincerity of his purpose: ‘Being a self-published author requires a certain skill set. Being a successful self-published author (SSPA) requires an even greater skill set. Just because you are self-published does not mean you are successful or that you will be a best-seller. Common characteristics of successful self-published authors include personality and character traits that can be seen in most entrepreneurs and successful business people. Let’s face it, publishing is a business and if you are self-publishing your books then you are a publisher, even if it is only publishing your own work. To be a successful independent author, requires an understanding of the business of publishing and an awareness of the complexities and issues facing authors in this highly competitive and evolving world. Secrets of Best-Selling Self-Published Authors is a book that provides a wealth of tips and information for authors who are travelling the self-publishing route.’

William drops some ideas that seduce us into his world - ‘Growth Hacking’ is an expansion method of marketing, in that the focus is primarily on growing a business or online platform to reap the best possible returns with the lowest possible cost involved. ‘ At times William’s pearls outshine his interviews. This is a solid, very helpful resource. Grady Harp, January 15
