Book Review: 'Barely Undercover' by Sarah Castille

Canadian author Sarah Castille has been a lawyer and knows the background for her insights into the legal profession as played out in her Chick Lit novels which she pens from her home on Vancouver Island. Her strong output includes the Redemption Series, Sinner's Tribe Motorcycle Club series, Ruin & Revenge series and this Legal Heat series, from which this is the second volume. As Sarah phrases it, her books are ‘steamy contemporary romance and romantic suspense novels featuring blazingly hot alpha heroes and the woe=men who tame them.’

The leading characters of this Leal Heat installment are James and Lana and Sarah’s introduction to these two happens in the first pages of this tense novel – ‘Moonlighting as Carpe Noctem’s head of security, the mouthwateringly sexy cop James had caught her with her finger on the shutter release. He’d liked her sass. She’d liked his over-the-top, crusty-cop style. After the case was solved and the bad guys were in jail, they’d had a few drinks and night after night of hot, kinky, mind-blowing intimacy. Then—poof! —he was gone. Never to be seen or heard from again. Heartless. What if he was here tonight? She hesitated for only a second before she stepped through the door. Although not dressed for an evening out, she always carried a change of clothes when she was on surveillance—a dress and a pair of heels that could take her anywhere from high-end restaurants to elegant parties, and from conferences to clubs. Yes, it was risky given this was a private club, but she couldn’t let Angel down. And if someone did recognize her, big deal. What’s the worst that could happen?‘

Easy to move into the plot –‘When private investigator Lana Parker follows a dangerous biker into an underground club, James Hunter is the last man she expects to see. But there he is, all dark looks and chiseled charms, ready to break her heart all over again. Danger is the name of the game for an undercover cop. And the last thing James wants is for the fiery beauty to come anywhere near the notorious biker gang he's trying to take down. Yet Lana has no intention of giving up her case, which means he'll have to keep her close to keep her safe. A risky proposition-especially when their blazing chemistry reignites an unforgettable passion. But when a dark terror emerges from the past, Lana goes on the run...and James gives up everything to save her. Backed into a corner, Lana must face her fears, including the one thing that frightens her most...her overwhelming feelings for the man whose searing glance sparks her most hidden desires, the man she should not trust, but cannot resist.’

Enticing entry into Sarah Castille’s world – this is a strong book that balances suspense with erotica. Grady Harp, December 17
