Book Review: 'Beyond The Red Door: The Soul Seeker' by E.H. James

Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!

James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.

THE DEMON SERIES of which BEYOND THE RED DOOR is the second volume demonstrates James’ mastery of the short story. In a brief 43 pages she sets the seed for the eight part series. The entire Demon Series will cover centuries, the second volume opens in California in 2012.

James’ synopsis covers the story well ‘Fifty years to the day Max Jensen walked into the Starke house, Jesse Miller is throwing a party. Jesse wants to go down in high school history as the kid to remember. Only problem is, he may just get his wish. If he thought throwing a party in the long abandoned house of a serial killer would do it, then he would be right. But what happens that night at the old Starke house isn't something you want to remember...not if you ever want to sleep again. Performing a mock ceremony to raise Starke from the dead proves to be a mistake of monumental proportion. And by the time Jesse realizes he is in over his head, he must now worry about keeping that same head on his shoulders. What would you do if the only way out was to go Beyond the Red Door...into the very mouth of hell?’

Knowing that the series continues makes the mystery of part 2 a very exciting continuation and growth. E.H. James is a master writer. Grady Harp, December 17
