Book Review: 'Taming the Beast' by Alyse Zaftig
This collection is quite a bargain – eleven stories by a fine groups of authors all centered on paranormal themes. It is interesting to see all the hubbub about the old classic BEAUTY AND THE BEAST that yet again I s hitting our movie theaters in a ultra-updated version combining live actors with animated morphs The theme has been used in literature, stage productions, animated full length films, and other old films and yet the fascination continues.
In this collection the ‘beast’ is frequently a shifter (very popular in books these days) and the authors have fine reputations in both stories such as the ones curated to this anthology as well as other themes. The authors included are Kit Fawkes, Cynthia Fox, Scarlett Grove, Olivia Arran, Tessa Rowan, Alyse Zaftig, J.M. Klaire, Amanda Jones, Jacqueline Sweet, and of course Kim Fox whose title of her contribution alone (BOOTY AND THE BEAST) is enough to draw readers into this mélange.
For example, Kim calls BOOTY AND THE BEAST’ a new story featuring a curious student who meets a dangerous beast in the woods. ‘Bella is ignoring the advice of everyone that she knows and is moving into the forest for two months to study the sleepy owl, and hopefully get an A+ on her dissertation paper. But she'll find more than just owls in the deep dark woods. Logan is not an ordinary bear shifter. His furious bear cannot be trusted around humans so he has banished himself to the woods forever. When Bella comes trespassing by will she meet Logan the man, or Logan the beast?’
Appetizer is excellent and the other stories are satisfying as well. Fun tales of Werewolves, Werebears, Shapeshifters, Magic, Witches, Dragons and more offer some relaxing hours of entertainment. No repeats here – all fresh material! Grady Harp, March 17
