Book Review: 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' by Brandon Carter

New York author Brandon Carter is one of the top personal trainers and nutritionists in North America. He not only has worked as a fitness model for Nike, Puma, Adidas, Men’s Health, etc, but he also has trained a number of professional athletes and models. Brandon was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. He studied Marketing at Howard University’s prestigious School of Business and now works full time as CEO of “Bro Laboratories”, a sports nutrition company that makes the quality bodybuilding supplements. He has also penned seven books on fitness and personality improvement – and his chiseled Greek God physique is a fine advertisement for his self-help books!

Brandon is a straight shooter. He defines that ubiquitous term ‘Alpha Male’ as well as anyone writing – and if that indeed is the goal of the male readers then get ready to learn about the myths of Nice Guys AND the myths surrounding the Alpha Males. He lines up the ‘lies about nice guys’ – ‘Because of My behavior I deserve something, Only jerks get ahead, I’m not a doormat, I’m just considerate, Eventually she’ll realize how much she wants me’ – sound familiar? Then do proceed.

Defining the Alpha Male traits, Brandon discusses Strength, Courage, Principled, Respected, Confidence, Honesty, Compassion, Activeness – and in the manner in which he defines each characteristic it becomes clear how Mr. Nice Guy just isn’t going to produce the traits of the Alpha Male everyone desires.

Brandon’s concluding remarks state this book’s mission well: ‘The world we live in today has wholesale rejected an authentic, strong male culture and has instead replaced it with a weak, cowardly and pleasure seeking culture instead. This has created a serious problem in our world. As we see greater division in the world, as we see a greater sense of frustration and anger between people from all sides of the spectrum, we must come to a conclusion that our traditional way of thinking about men has been flawed. Men were not meant to be loud-mouthed, aggressive, beer-swilling simpletons. We were meant to be rugged, strong and thoughtful creatures, with a deep sense of complexity, moral obligation and honor. It is hard to fight against the tide of the culture around us that has worked so hard to create the image of the man as a simpleton, but if we make the conscious decision to stop living the way the media tells us to and instead seek a new way of living, we will be able to not only change our own lives but change the world as well. This is a call to all men who desire to live better lives, to have greater relationships with their wives and to raise their children to be better people, you don’t have to live the shallow life that the world is so adamant about you living. You can stop chasing after stuff and instead make a choice to return to the principles and honor that once made our male culture so much greater. Stand up for yourself, grow a spine
and embrace your destiny as a man! You aren’t here to buy more stuff, have more sex and live a selfish life. You are here to change the world around you and it starts with becoming an Alpha Male.’

Brandon’s several book may be brief in length, but he doesn’t waste the readers’ time: he just gets to the point post haste! Grady Harp, March 17
