Book Review: 'Into the Nothing' by B.T. Urruela
The extraordinarily handsome and buff Florida author BT Urruela is a combat US Army Infantryman wounded amputee, purple heart recipient, model for Michael Stokes phenomenal photography book ALWAYS LOYAL (a book of buff hunks all of whom are amputees whose presence on film is more striking than most any male models), motivational speaker, personal performance trainer, co-fonder and rand ambassador for the non-profit organization VETSports and has written both independent and traditionally published five books. He is a man’s man, an honored veteran, a popular model, a philanthropist - AND he can write!
BT’s writing is strong, propulsive, raw, and tender at the same time. He knows how to build characters at a pace that allows the reader to grow into the story with full knowledge of back-story and possible future events. Those gifts are evident in his Prologue – ‘Inmate #0102258… That's who I am now. Xander Evans doesn't exist anymore. The man I was three years ago is now just a collection of memories quickly deteriorating. With each day spent in this hell, these four concrete walls relentlessly close in on me, inch by inch. I watched the TV shows. I was a Lock Up addict. Hell, I had even seen the very episode that Missouri Correctional Facility was featured on; the same ****hole I now call home. These desperate walls echo the sobs loudly and in a sad twist of fate, I saw it all long before today. The violence. The rage. The misery. I judged it all from in front of a TV screen. Now, I'm just another animal locked up in this cage— for a crime I didn't even commit. And my entire world has crumbled because of it. Okay. I get it. That's what they all say, right?’
The well-sculpted plot unfolds as follows – ‘Xander Evans has been on the road for many years. Never settling. Always moving from one place to another, unable to let go of his past. He lived a tragic childhood, spending most of those years in foster care. He's never felt like he's had a home. That is until he stops in the small town of Truman Valley, Missouri, where he meets a woman who will change everything he's ever known. Paige Watson has it all. A loving family, beautiful home, and a great career. The only thing she's missing....is love. After escaping an abusive relationship, she opens her heart up to a stranger. He is unlike any man she's ever met. He came into her life and turned it completely upside down. Everything is perfect. That is, until one fateful night. A night that would tear the Watson family apart, never to be put back together again. A night that would send Xander away to prison for life.’
It is always surprising to discover a debut book that has such depth of experiential sense to it, but with the traumas and survival instincts BT Urruela has lived through his perceptions are keen and understandably real. This is a very fine book – the beginning of the series Broken Outlaw – and this is an author who has a significant literary career opening for him. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, January 17
