Book Review: 'The Haunted' by Cassie Alexander
Author Cassie Alexander has the background for the anatomy and psychological permutations of the many patients she has attended as a registered nurse and she uses her experience in her many series of novels – the five book Edie Spence urban fantasy series, the Dark Ink Tattoo sultry urban fantasy about vampires in Vegas, and now THE HAUNTED series of which this is the initial offering. As her website states, ‘She likes alchemy, blood, and science, in that order, and is your general all around nerd, with an emphasis on medical oddities and horror films.’
Cassie builds tension from the first pages of this frightening novel with a description of the main character Daphne entering a new mansion just purchased without her agreement by her too often absent wealthy husband. The manner in which she introduces the servant staff and Daphne’s coping with being alone in a strange new house brings on the story – a gothic paranormal ghost story that concerns the previous owner of Daphne’s new ‘home’.
But the synopsis relates well the action to come – ‘Daphne Vance's life is perfect -- she's a beautiful, devoted wife, and her husband has just bought her a vast countryside estate to start their family in. But when her husband leaves on a business trip, it doesn't feel like she's alone in the mansion -- she can feel eyes watching her, and hot hands trailing up her thighs. The domineering spirit of the mansion's former owner is still present -- and when she discovers her husband cheating on her, she doesn't want to resist the Master anymore....’
A good old-fashioned ghost story mixed with a healthy dollop of steamy erotica makes this rather short novel a fine choice for a nocturnal read - if you leave a light on….Grady Harp, January 17
