Book Review: 'Luke' by Lane Hart

North Carolina author Lane Hart is a prolific erotica writer with a dozen steamy stories that have a committed following. Lane draws from her background - a Masters in Criminal Justice and having spent ten years working as a paralegal for a criminal defense attorney – to keep her stories gritty. Her range of topics is extensive – from paranormal to her favored martial arts and football players to cops to vampires – and in this book she manages to focus on sports. She is married to fellow author D.B. West.

Lane has a talent for character development, not a trait we often see in erotica writer. The opening chapter gives us a strong impression of her main characters. More than her other installments in this Cocky Cage Fighter Series, LUKE focuses on interfamily consequences of the death of a sibling – and the aftermath.

But into the very well paced story – ‘Have you ever loved someone who is completely wrong for you? God knows I have. But in my defense, I fell for Megan Warner years before my older brother Eli ever noticed her, before he asked her out and made her his. During the two years they were together, I would’ve given anything to be with Meg, anything except for losing my brother, my best friend, in a horrible accident when he was only eighteen. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss Eli or think about the stupid mistake Meg and I made after his funeral, before she disappeared. After four long years without a word, Megan has moved back to Cary, North Carolina but she’s not alone. She has a three-year-old son. My mom swears the boy with golden curls and blue eyes is Eli’s, and she’s so damn happy to get back a piece of the son she lost. But I can’t help but wonder if she’s wrong. In fact, I think there’s a pretty good chance that Megan’s son is actually mine.’

Grief, succor, kindness, lust – all in the accidental death of Luke’s brother Eli on a birthday evening with his lover Nate instead of with his girlfriend Megan - and the aftermath. Pregnant Megan leaves for Phoenix, gives birth to Lennox, and returns to Cary, NC as a Safety Education and Reproductive Health teacher. The manner in which Lane brings the bruised Luke and Megan together is masterful – and steamy!

Lane includes some of the characters from the other books in this series and that offers credibility to the motivations of how this story will play out. She continues to paint visible credible characters for her series and the variations in stories are yet another reason to keep following her writing! Grady Harp, April 17
