Book Review: 'Island Pleasures' by Noah Harris

New York author Noah Harris is a 28-year-old bisexual man currently single and living in a small apartment in New York City. Though somewhat shy he is a humanitarian who sees the world in which we live as a community bonded in a natural approach to our feelings and ourselves and our interaction with others. His bisexual nature allows him to create well rounded characters – most all of his novels are M/M romances but they are much more than the usual erotica we encounter in film, television, and social media. Noah explores the boundaries of types and wields a strong brush as he paints his fascinating people.

Noah’s ability to set a stage for his story is unmatched – ‘Amidst the silence of groggy nothingness and the pulsing of the throbbing pain that seemed to rush through everything, the gentle sound of water lapping against the shore was the first sound that he became aware of. The white noise gradually pulled the man out of unconsciousness, assuring him that he was indeed alive. His eyes twitched as he slowly pulled himself from the darkness and reveled in the blind sensations around him. He groaned as he felt the sharp cracks of pain racing from his head and branching down his spine. A warm grainy softness greeted his cheek while he winced from the pain that emanated from every part of his body. Though he had been out cold for who knows how long, he felt heavy with exhaustion. His eyes pulled themselves open to a blinding white and he gingerly rolled over onto his back. His breathing was heavy as he took in his new surroundings. He slowly dragged his hands through the pearly white sand under his body, letting the particles run between his coarse fingers. Warm water coursed against his feet, periodically pulling in and out against the shore. He meekly opened his eyes again, in order to fully take in the sky above him, only to see nothing but faint hues of grey. The man pulled himself up, using all of his strength to sit upright. His drenched fatigues clung to his body, pulling him back toward to ground.’

So we’re on an island and get ready for erotic passion to blossom in the strangest way – ‘Waking up alone after a crash on a deserted island, Barry Hodgeson hopes for a speedy rescue. He’d give anything to return to the safety of his conventional life. He spends the first moments of his isolation longing for the comforts of his one-bedroom apartment in Florida and the love of his severe, but well-meaning parents. Instead, life has other, much more seductive plans for the young Coast Guard pilot. As the weeks pass, Barry realizes he isn’t alone in this remote paradise. A mysterious stranger has been seeing to his most basic survival needs. Are his host’s attentions well intentioned or does the alluring Xanathen see Barry as an unwelcome intruder? Human desires are boiled down to their most primal and transformation - finding passion in unexpected places.’

Well-developed characters engaging in steamy erotica – Noah’s trademark. This one is a winner. Grady Harp, July 17
