Music Review: 'Liszt: 12 Etudes d'exécution transcendante, S.139 - No.6 Vision (Lento)' by Daniil Trifonov

That Daniil Trifonov is a young, staggeringly brilliant pianist is an established fact. His recordings that are available on both MP3 and CD are magnificent, but this recording has something special. This is the first time that the Complete Liszt Etudes have been recorded as a whole for DG. And Daniil Trifonov is one of the few pianists to have recorded them all in one go in an unbelievable five days.

The works on these two discs are as follows:
12 Etudes d'exécution transcendante, S.139
2 Etudes de Concert, S.145
3 Etudes de Concert, S. 144
6 Grandes Etudes de Paganini, S. 141

To comment that the performances are dazzling would be an understatement. But it is the knowledge that these Liszt masterworks are played in toto in a short recording period brings the flavor of Trifonov's sense of architecture which for this listener is unmatched among the many gifted pianists of today who are also playing this repertoire.

Few artists can match Trifonov’s virtuosity as well as the emotional spirit of these Liszt masterpieces. It is a feat that sets the gold standard for Liszt’s etudes. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, August 17
